| Winchester Speedway Winchester, VA Results August 30, 2008
On a long nite at Winchester Speedway, that would see racing linger on into the early morning hours, Allen Brannon was able to seize victory in the SMART Tour race, Tommy Armel would open his win account for the year with the Late Model win, Bryan Kerns took a big win in the Pure Stock feature, and Mark Digges the 4-Cylinder points leader all season scored his season first. Satch Worley would take the companion Virginia Sprint Series feature. The story of the night was a surprise rain shower that hit the track followign SMART time trials, the subsuquent delay saw feature racing not get started till after midnight with the last checkered falling at 2 AM.
Allen Brannon came into Saturday night9 9s event the SMART Tour points leader, but was looking to take the win at his home track of Winchester, after having come one position short in SMART’s first visit to this track. He looked strong from the beginning, setting a new track record for Semi-Lates at Winchester Speedway in time trials before the rains hit. When the feature took green at just shy of 12:30 Sunday morning, Allen Brannon had the pole and took the lead over Gerald Davis. And the pressure was on as Davis worked all over the rear end of the lead Brannon machine. Behind the lead pair was SMART regular Jared Almarode, who spent the entire race chasing down the dominant duo. Much as in the first SMART tour race here, Davis and Brannon put on a racing clinic. But Brannon held the edge throughout by the narrowest of margins, Davis would try to take the lead with a few to go but the two would make contact and Davis would fall several carlengths behind allowing Brannon clear sailing to the victory, Brannon’s second on the SMART tour, and fifth this season at Winchester Speedway. Following the lead pair was Almarode in third, Brad Ritter, and Winchester points leader Brian Buckler would round out the top five. Heats for the 26 cars went to Allen Brannon, Gerald Davis, and Jared Almarode.
By the time the Late Models hit the track , the surface that had been treacherous most of the night following the rains had matured into a very fast, tacky track. And what ensured has to be one of the quickest events ever seen. Tommy Armel took the jump early over Allen Brannon, and that was the way the event would unfold, the top cars runnign the high side blasting at breathtakign speeds around the 3/8 mile speedway. Hardcharger for the evening was Bo Feathers who had started twelth and by the end of the race had reeled in the dominant duo of Armel and Brannon. Feathers would clinch his 2008 Late Model title with his finish this evening. Tommy Armel accrued his first win of the year in dominant fashion over Brannon and Feather, Mike Hardy put on an impressive showing in fourth, and Walter Crouch took the fifth slot. Heats for the 23 cars went to Tommy Armel and Denny Bonebrake.
=0 D Bryan Kerns effectively destroyed the field at Winchester this weekend, taking the jump from the green Kerns took a huge lead that was never headed. His close competitor in points Donnie Kenney took the checkered in second spot, Buddy Wilson, Walt Homberg, and Joey Carter rounded out the top five. Taking the heats for the 20 cars present were Mike Rose and Mike Bennett.
Mark Digges has led the 4-Cylinder points all season long, but had yet to crack into victory lane, coming close a few times. The last event of the night, saw Butch Mayo start from the pole, and take the lead at the green. But Digges who has been consistent all season long was too fast to be headed as he took the lead from Mayo, and streched his advantage, second in points Chuck Johnson would also have a strong run, moving up into second, but despite some late cautions Johnson was unable to get a run on a very strong Mark Digges who would collect his season first, Delmas Moreland, Shawn Sturtz, and Allen Whitt, Jr. would round out the top five. Heats for the20 cars went to William Riley and Allen Whitt, Jr.
