Chub Frank Heads To World 100 With Momentum & New Sponsor Crown Drilling

This weekend’s prestigious World 100 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, is coming at a good time for Chub Frank.

Carrying plenty of momentum from a late-summer surge and armed with additional sponsorship for the crown-jewel event, the veteran driver from Bear Lake, Pa., heads to the half-mile oval feeling like he has a legitimate shot at a $42,000 victory.

“I like my chances with this car,” said Chub, talking about the 2005-vintage Rocket machine that has brought his season alive since he borrowed it from western Pennsylvania racer Chad Valone=2 0and began running it late last month. “I think we’ll have something that can get the job done (at Eldora), but it all depends on if we can get some luck.

“It’s the World (100) – that’s all you have to say about it. Anything can happen.”

A winner of the World 100 in 2004, Chub will go for his second triumph with the Ohio-based Crown Drilling firm joining his list of sponsors that includes Corry Rubber, Lake Shore Paving, Hino Toyota, All-Star Performance, Corry Laser, Slavic Corporation, Farr MotorSports, Custom Race Engines and GW Performance. The Crown Drilling logo will appear on Chub’s Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* as part of a one-race deal that Chub hopes could develop into a longer-term relationship.

Chub enters the World 100 activities, which include time trials on Friday (Sept. 11) and heat races, last-chance events and the 100-lap A-Main on Saturday (Sept. 12), coming off a solid, if not spectacular Labor Day week of competition on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.

After seeing his two-race WoO LMS winning streak end with a still-strong third-place finish on Aug. 29 at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., Chub embarked on a four-race swing of 50-lap events through his home Northeast region. He recorded finishes of sixth on Sept. 1 at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa.; fifth on Sept. 2 at Brewerton (N.Y.) Speedway (after starting 21st); ninth on Sept. 5 in the opening half of the Oil Region Labor Day Classic at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa.; and 12th on Sept. 6 in the finale of Tri-City’s doubleheader.

Chub’s lone finish outside the top 10 came in the second 50-lapper at Tri-City after he was forced to park the ’05 Rocket that he has become so comfortable driving. Chub and his crew discovered an engine problem in the machine while going through it late Sunday afternoon, prompting him to bring out his backup car – a newer 2008 model Rocket – for that evening’s action due to time constraints.

Following the Tri-City weekend, Chub made the short drive back to his shop and started World 100 preparations on Monday morning. On his agenda was putting another motor in his ’05 car and reskinning it with half of a new body.

Chub, who ranks seventh in the WoO LMS points standings (42 points behind sixth-place Shane Clanton) with five events remaining on the 2009 schedule, will have new t-shirts for sale throughout the World 100 weeke nd at the Slavic Corporation merchandise trailer parked along Eldora Speedway’s T-Shirt Row in the spectator area outside turn one.
